Compass is branching out – into the education world!
For decades, Compass has worked to help communities, governments, First Nations, industry, multi-stakeholder groups, and others untangle complex problems and make thoughtful, rigorous decisions. Now, Compass Principals Lee Failing and Graham Long are turning their attention to a new group of decision-makers: students.
The Decision Playbook: Making Thoughtful Choices in a Complex World, is the result of a collaborative effort between decision scientists and educators to bring the principles and tools of decision science into the classroom. This book and its accompanying classroom tools are a resource for educators committed to empowering their students to make thoughtful choices that reflect their values and objectives.
Throughout the development of the Playbook, Lee and Graham were inspired by the dedication of their education partners, and their ability to take the geeky and occasionally dry concepts of decision science and make them exciting and accessible for students. In the Playbook, we don’t talk about “Structured Decision-Making” – we talk about “The 6 Decision Maker Moves”, “Decision Traps”, and the interactive classroom game “Guts vs Heads”. The principles and process developed and refined by decision scientists and practitioners are repackaged in a way that is engaging and inspiring for the young people who are increasingly involved in making tough societal decisions.
The Playbook is the product of our creative partnership with the Delta School District and the Network of Inquiry and Indigenous Education (NOII). It’s available for free download from https://deltalearns.ca/decisions/the-decision-playbook/ . Physical copies can also be purchased for $15, with all proceeds going to the Network of Inquiry and Indigenous Education.
